Ollie trick tip

Since Alan "Ollie" Gelfand invented the ollie in 1978, it has been the single most important trick in skateboarding.

Almost every street or vert trick strongly relies on the ollie. Learn this one really well, this will be the foundation to build all the other tricks on. It can take some time to master the ollie, but it will make your life a lot easier.

(Videos by skaterboy1790 and skate999ordie)

  1. 1

Start with your feet positioned more or less like in the picture below.

  2. 2

Crouch down for the jump. Don't go too deep or you won't be able to pop & drag the board.

  3. 3

Jump up using your back foot. Snap the tail down hard and fast. Raise your front foot and don't put pressure on the board with it while jumping.

  4. 4

Move your front foot towards the nose of the board to level it out. Take it easy, it's a gentle drag, not a ninja kick.

At the same, raise your back foot.

  5. 5

Try to stay level and land with your 4 wheels at the same time. Bend your knees a little to absorb the impact of the jump.

Tips

  • Try to practise with at least a little speed, and work your way up. Even if you're barely moving forward, it's better than practising stationary.

  • Your back foot provides the power, your front foot will guide the board.

  • Your board can never go higher than your feet. If you don't jump high, you won't ollie high either.

  • The tail of your board can hit the ground when you pop, but contact needs to be as short as possible.

Trick tips for ANY tricks, helpful for ollie too! The mistakes I was doing was not jumping off with your back foot, so when my tail hit the ground it didn't have the chance to bounce from the ground and get in the air cause my foot kinda stopped it... then I watched slow motion ollie on youtube and realised, the skater moved his back foot off of the deck before it could touch the ground... also the second mistake was with my front foot, I didn't curve it, it is really weird, but such a silly mistake will make you not to ollie, just curve your foot like you would want to slide the grip with your pinkie on foot... also VERY HELPFUL in doing any tricks: If you have a camera, record yourself doing tricks, watch video of yourself (In slow motion or frame by frame) and then watch the video of other person doing the trick (in slow motion or frame by frame again) so you can see what you're doing wrong, it's very important to make sure you don't miss any detail
